The European Research Council (ERC) has published its Work Programme for 2022 which features the highest annual budget for ERC grants to date with more than EUR 2.4 billion. It reintroduces the Synergy Grant (SyG), a slightly redesigned version of the Proof of Concept (PoC) Grant, and the Public Engagement with Research Award. A summary of the key features of the Work Programme 2022 is provided on the ERC website.
The ERC Synergy Grant Call 2022 (SyG) will close on 10 November 2021. The guidance document “Information for Applicants to the Synergy Grant Call” is available in the Funding & tender opportunities Portal, while the proposal templates in rtf-format should be released soon, once the submission tool is open.
The ERC Proof of Concept Grant (PoC) comes with a few adaptions in Horizon Europe. PoC Proposals will be evaluated based on excellence only, assessed from three angles: breakthrough innovation potential, approach and methodology, and capacity and commitment of the PI. Exceptionally, the Work Programme 2022 offers two distinct PoC Calls, to compensate for the lack of a PoC Call in Work Programme 2021. The first call, ERC-2022-PoC1, is equipped with a EUR 25 million budget and a single cut-off date on 14 October 2021 (eligibility reference date: 1 January 2021). The second Call, ERC-2022-PoC2, also endowed with budget of EUR 25 million, features 3 cut-off dates, namely 15 February, 19 May and 29 September 2022 (eligibility reference date: 1 January 2022).
The Public Engagement with Research Award will recognise three ERC grantees, with a prize of 10,000 euros each, in the categories:
- “Involve” for citizen science
- “Inspire” for public outreach, and
- “Influence” for media and policy.
The competition is expected to open on 5 October 2021, the deadline is scheduled for 11 January 2022.
